About this course

English language and English literature, studied together, give you access to two distinct but deeply connected ways of understanding how language works. English language study is systematic and descriptive, examining the structures of the language, how it varies across social contexts and historical periods, how it is acquired, and how it is used in different forms of discourse. English literature engages with the full range of texts that the English-language tradition has produced, asking what they mean, how they achieve their effects, and what they reveal about the cultures and minds that made them.

Together, the two disciplines produce a richly grounded education in communication, meaning, and analysis.

At Cardiff you will study this three-year full-time joint honours programme, combining systematic study of the English language with engagement with literature across a range of periods, genres, and critical perspectives. You will develop skills in linguistic analysis alongside the close reading, interpretation, and sustained written argument that literary study demands. The combination equips you to understand and articulate solutions for the complex problems of language and communication in society, from questions of literacy and educational policy to the analysis of political rhetoric and the critical examination of literary culture.

English language and literature graduates develop skills that are valued across a wide range of careers. Education is a major destination, particularly English teaching at secondary level, where the ability to teach both language and literature is directly relevant. Publishing, journalism, copywriting, communications, speech and language therapy (with further study), academic research, and the civil service are also common paths.

The analytical rigour and communicative precision the degree develops are assets in any professional context that depends on clear, careful use of language. Postgraduate study in linguistics, literature, education, or speech and language therapy is a natural continuation for many graduates.
