English Language and Literature

English language and literature together offer a dual perspective on English as both a living communicative system and a medium for creative and cultural expression. The language strand applies the methods of linguistics to English, examining how it works at the level of sounds, structures, meanings, and social use. The literature strand reads English texts closely and critically, situating them within their historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts and developing interpretive and analytical skills through engagement with a wide range of literary forms and traditions.

The combination is intellectually rich: each discipline sheds light on the other, and graduates emerge with both scientific understanding of language and cultivated sensitivity to its creative possibilities.

At the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, this four-year extended degree provides additional time to develop deep understanding and strong capabilities across both strands. The extended structure is particularly suited to students who want a more gradual and thorough engagement with demanding academic content. You will study linguistics systematically, covering phonology, grammar, discourse, and sociolinguistics, and you will develop literary skills through close reading of texts from across literary history, engaging with poetry, fiction, and drama in different genres and periods.

Throughout the programme, you will be encouraged to draw connections between the linguistic and literary dimensions of English and to develop your own critical voice.

This full-time programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, making it one of the most experientially well-rounded English degrees available.
