English Language as an academic discipline is not simply about using the language correctly. It is about understanding how language works as a system, how it varies across regions, social groups and contexts, how it changes over time, and how it shapes and is shaped by the societies that use it. It draws on linguistics, sociology, cognitive science and cultural theory, using these frameworks to examine phenomena that most people take for granted, from the way children learn to talk to the way political speeches persuade, and from the differences between regional accents to the emergence of new forms of communication online.

At the University of Liverpool you will study the structures of English at every level, including phonology, grammar, semantics and discourse, as well as the social and historical forces that have shaped the language. You will engage with methods for collecting and analysing linguistic data, developing the ability to move between close textual analysis and broader theoretical argument. The programme includes a sandwich year placement and the opportunity for a year abroad, giving you the chance to experience English in a different national context and to bring comparative insights back into your studies.

Work placement experience is also incorporated, helping you develop professional skills alongside academic ones.

The skills an English Language degree develops are genuinely broad. The ability to analyse communication precisely, to understand how language functions in different contexts, and to work with complex data are valued by employers across education, publishing, broadcasting, marketing, public policy and the technology sector.
