English Literature and Religion Theology & Spirituality

English Literature and Religion, Theology and Spirituality is a joint honours degree that brings together two disciplines concerned with the deepest questions human beings have asked about meaning, value, suffering, beauty and transcendence, and with the texts and traditions through which those questions have been explored. English Literature develops your ability to read with precision and insight, to engage critically with literary works across periods and cultures, and to construct well-reasoned arguments about how language creates meaning and illuminates human experience. Religion, Theology and Spirituality examines the beliefs, practices, texts and institutions of the world's major religious traditions, as well as contemporary forms of spirituality that extend beyond conventional faith boundaries.

At Liverpool Hope University, this full-time three-year programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and work placement opportunities. Liverpool's unique cultural and religious landscape, with its two iconic cathedrals, the oldest mosque in England and a history shaped by faith and cultural diversity, provides a vivid living context for the degree's themes. You will explore the wisdom, mysticism and practices of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism alongside the literary traditions that have engaged with religious experience, from medieval devotional writing to contemporary spiritual fiction.

Graduates from English Literature and Religion, Theology and Spirituality programmes go on to careers in education, theology, chaplaincy, inter-faith work, journalism, publishing, social work, the voluntary sector, community development and academic research. The combination of literary and theological literacy is particularly valued in roles that involve communicating across cultural and religious difference with sensitivity and understanding.
