English Literature

English literature is the sustained, serious study of the full range of literary writing in English, from the earliest Old English texts through medieval poetry and drama, the Renaissance, the novel's emergence in the eighteenth century, the Romantics and Victorians, modernism, and the diverse literatures of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, including writing from the United States, postcolonial literatures in English, and Scottish, Welsh, and Irish writing. It is a discipline that trains you to read closely and carefully, to interpret complex texts in their historical and cultural contexts, and to construct and communicate well-reasoned arguments about what literature does and why it matters.

At the University of Huddersfield you will study this programme part time, with a sandwich year and a work placement also incorporated into the degree. The part-time mode makes the programme accessible for students who need to balance their studies with employment or other commitments, while the sandwich year and placement give you the opportunity to apply the communication, critical thinking, and research skills developed through your literary studies in a professional context. Across the programme you will read widely across periods, genres, and traditions, developing your skills in close reading, literary analysis, contextual interpretation, and critical writing.

You will engage with theories of reading and interpretation alongside the primary literary texts, developing both analytical depth and methodological awareness.

English literature graduates have exceptionally broad career prospects, precisely because the skills the degree develops, including the ability to read carefully, think critically, write clearly, and understand human experience through narrative, are valued across almost every professional field. Careers in publishing, journalism, teaching, broadcasting, the civil service, marketing, law, and the arts are all common. The placement experience adds a direct professional dimension.

Further study in English literature, creative writing, cultural studies, or literary journalism is taken by some graduates, and postgraduate degrees in English are a route to academic careers as well as to many professional roles.
