English Literature
English literature is the systematic study of imaginative writing in the English language, from Chaucer to contemporary fiction, from Shakespeare and the early modern stage to the dystopian novels and digital storytelling of today. It is a discipline that asks you to read carefully and critically, to engage with texts as aesthetic objects shaped by language, form and tradition, and to understand how literature both reflects and shapes the societies in which it is produced and consumed. It also asks the largest questions: what is the relationship between literature and truth, between representation and reality, between individual voice and cultural context?
At the University of Kent, this three-year full-time degree takes you across the full sweep of English literary history, from medieval to postmodern, engaging with canonical authors alongside more recent and less familiar voices. You will read across genres, including poetry, drama, fiction and non-fiction, and engage with critical and theoretical frameworks that deepen your understanding of how literary texts work and what they mean. Kent's range extends to contemporary popular culture, inviting you to think about how literary forms and critical tools apply to texts as different as Jane Austen and Taylor Swift, which reflects the department's commitment to thinking broadly about what literature is and what it is for.
Close reading, written argument and the independent critical voice you develop through sustained engagement with difficult texts are the central skills of the degree. You will write extensively, engage in seminar discussion, and develop the ability to construct and defend original interpretations of literary questions.
Graduates from English literature degrees move into publishing, education, journalism, the creative industries, law, the civil service, communications, the cultural sector, and a wide range of other careers. Postgraduate study in English, creative writing, education, or cultural studies is a well-established pathway.
