English Literature/Politics

English literature and politics address two of the most enduring human concerns: how we make meaning through language and story, and how we organise collective life and exercise power. Each discipline enriches the other. Literature opens up the inner life of political moments, giving texture to history and ideology through narrative, character, and form.

Politics provides frameworks for understanding the forces that shape the societies in which writers work and to which readers belong. Together they develop a graduate who can read closely, argue rigorously, and understand the world both imaginatively and analytically.

At the University of Glasgow this part-time programme includes a year abroad, offering you the opportunity to study in another country and to encounter different literary and political traditions from a new vantage point. In literature you will explore all aspects of writing in English from early modern to postmodern, including American, Irish, and postcolonial literatures, critical theory, creative writing, and the relationship between literature and other arts, media, and science. In politics you will engage with political theory, comparative government, international relations, and the analysis of political institutions and behaviour.

The two fields are brought into genuine conversation throughout the degree, so you develop an integrated perspective rather than two separate bodies of knowledge running in parallel.

Graduates of this combination go on to careers in journalism, publishing, law, public policy, the civil service, international organisations, NGOs, education, and the arts. The analytical skills developed across both disciplines are valued wherever careful reading and persuasive writing matter, which is to say almost everywhere. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in literature, politics, political theory, or journalism, or to professional training in law.

The combination is particularly well suited to careers in policy communications, cultural diplomacy, and any field where understanding both text and context is essential.
