About this course

English as an academic subject at Queen Mary University of London begins from the conviction that writing is one of the most powerful forces in human life, shaping perception, opinion, and culture, for better or worse, across every domain of social existence. Studying English develops the ability to read with attentiveness and critical intelligence, to recognise how meaning is constructed and how language is used to persuade, illuminate, or deceive, and to communicate clearly and persuasively yourself. These are capacities that translate across an extraordinary range of professional and intellectual contexts.

This four-year, full-time programme at Queen Mary offers an extended engagement with the discipline, giving you more time to develop depth in literary study and to pursue your own scholarly interests within the degree. You will study writing in English across periods, genres, and cultural traditions, developing expertise in literary history, critical theory, and the close reading of texts. Queen Mary's location in one of the most culturally diverse parts of London and its particular strengths in postcolonial literature, contemporary writing, and the relationship between literature and other cultural forms give the degree a distinctive character.

English graduates from Queen Mary pursue careers across publishing, journalism, broadcasting, education, law, the civil service, and the cultural sector. The analytical and communication skills developed by the degree are broadly applicable, and the particular emphasis on critical reading as a tool for understanding power and culture in the world gives graduates a distinctive perspective. The four-year duration also provides additional time to develop academic work and to consider postgraduate options.

Further study in English, creative writing, or related humanities subjects is a common route for those who wish to pursue academic or specialist professional careers.
