About this course

English with French at the University of Dundee allows you to develop your engagement with two of the great literary traditions of the Western canon alongside a strong practical grounding in the French language. French literature, from the medieval lais and fabliaux through Montaigne's essays and Racine's tragedies to the novel tradition of Stendhal, Flaubert and Proust, and on to the twentieth-century innovations of Beckett, Sartre and Perec, represents one of the richest and most varied literary inheritances in European culture. Studying it alongside English literature gives you a genuinely comparative perspective on how language, form and culture interact across linguistic boundaries.

This four-year full-time MA (Hons) programme allows you to build from a basic overview of French, working towards a level that allows serious engagement with French literary and cultural material, while pursuing a wide-ranging study of English literature from the medieval period to the present day. You will be encouraged to choose modules that reflect your own developing interests as the programme advances, giving the degree a personal trajectory within a rigorous academic framework. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to spend time in a French-speaking country, deepening your language skills and cultural knowledge through direct immersion.

Graduates of English with French programmes are well prepared for careers in publishing, journalism, education, the civil service and diplomatic service, translation and interpreting, law, the cultural sector, and any professional context where the combination of strong analytical and communication skills with French language competence is an advantage. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in English, French, or comparative literature, and some develop academic careers as scholars and researchers.

The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student cit…
