Environmental Civil Engineering

Environmental civil engineering is the discipline concerned with designing, building, and managing infrastructure in ways that are both functional and environmentally responsible. Civil engineering provides the technical foundations: structural analysis, geotechnics, hydraulics, transportation systems, and construction management. The environmental dimension centres those technical skills on sustainability, resource efficiency, the management of environmental risk, and the challenge of building infrastructure that works with natural systems rather than against them.

As climate change, resource scarcity, and growing urbanisation reshape the demands placed on infrastructure, environmental civil engineers are increasingly central to how societies adapt and develop.

At Glasgow Caledonian University, this part-time programme is designed for students who are passionate about creating sustainable infrastructure and addressing environmental challenges through engineering practice. You will study structural engineering, geotechnics, water and environmental engineering, construction management, and sustainability, developing both the technical competence and the environmental sensitivity that this field requires. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you significant professional experience and an international perspective before you graduate.

Many pursue chartered engineer status through the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineers or the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management. Postgraduate study in environmental engineering, sustainability, or water management is a well-supported continuation.
