Environmental Geography with Studies in the USA

Environmental geography examines the relationship between human societies and the natural systems they depend on and alter. It draws on physical geography, ecology, environmental science, and social science to understand how landscapes form and change, how climate and weather systems operate, how ecosystems respond to pressure, and how human activities interact with these processes at scales ranging from the local to the global. The discipline is urgently relevant: understanding environmental change and its consequences is one of the most pressing intellectual tasks of our time, and environmental geographers contribute to that understanding across research, policy, and practice.

At Salford this three-year full-time BSc is designed with an international dimension built in. The programme includes studies in the USA, giving you direct exposure to how environmental geography is approached and practised in a North American context, and broadening your understanding of how environmental challenges and policy responses vary across different political and geographical settings. You will develop skills in field investigation, data collection and analysis, geographical information systems, and environmental assessment, gaining the practical capability that employers in environmental sectors look for alongside theoretical understanding.

The curriculum engages seriously with climate change, biodiversity loss, land use change, and the governance structures through which societies attempt to manage environmental risks. You will develop both the scientific literacy to understand these issues technically and the critical perspective to evaluate the social, political, and economic dimensions of environmental problems and proposed solutions.

Graduates move into careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, local and national government, environmental regulation, sustainability roles in the private sector, international development, and research. Many also continue to postgraduate study in environmental science, geography, sustainability, or environmental policy, building the specialist expertise that senior roles in these areas typically require.
