Environmental Management
Environmental management is the applied discipline concerned with how organisations, governments and communities understand and manage their impact on the natural environment, and how they can operate more sustainably within ecological limits. It draws on environmental science, ecology, policy, economics, law and management to address questions about how natural resources are used and protected, how environmental risks are assessed and mitigated, and how the transition to a lower-carbon, more sustainable economy can be managed in practice. As sustainability moves from the periphery to the centre of organisational strategy, the demand for graduates who can think and work across the technical and managerial dimensions of this challenge has grown considerably.
At Glasgow Caledonian University you will study environmental management over four years of full-time study, on a programme that equips you with the specialist skills that are increasingly in demand as organisations prioritise green issues and sustainability. A sandwich year and the opportunity for a year abroad extend the programme with substantial professional and international experience, and work placement is integrated throughout, giving you direct exposure to how environmental management is practised in industry, government and the voluntary sector. The typical tariff of 152 reflects a programme that combines scientific credibility with management and policy skills.
Graduates work in environmental consultancy, corporate sustainability and environmental management roles, local and national government, environmental agencies, utilities and energy companies, construction and development, NGOs and international organisations. Roles include environmental manager, sustainability consultant, environmental impact assessor, carbon and energy analyst, ecology and nature conservation specialist, and green infrastructure planner. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in environmental management, sustainability, climate change or related fields, and professional accreditation through bodies such as the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management or the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment is available for qualifying graduates.
