About this course

Environmental management is concerned with the practical challenge of protecting and sustaining natural systems while meeting the needs of human societies. It draws on ecology, geography, economics, law and social science to address questions about how land, water, biodiversity and other resources can be managed sustainably, how environmental risks are assessed and mitigated, and how policy, planning and organisational practice can be shaped to reduce environmental harm. It is a discipline shaped by urgency, given the scale and pace of environmental change, and one in which employment opportunities are growing.

At the University of Manchester, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year and work placement, giving you extended practical experience in an environmental or sustainability role before you complete your studies. You will study environmental systems and processes alongside organisational and policy dimensions of environmental management, engaging with topics including ecology, environmental law and regulation, sustainability strategy, environmental impact assessment, geographic information systems and the economics of natural resources. The programme develops your capacity to analyse environmental problems rigorously and to work toward practical, evidence-based solutions in real organisational contexts.

Graduates work in environmental consultancies, government environmental agencies, local authorities, conservation organisations, the energy sector, corporate sustainability teams, international development organisations and research institutions. Roles in environmental assessment, sustainability management, nature conservation, policy analysis, environmental auditing and landscape planning all draw on the skills and knowledge developed in this programme. Many graduates also proceed to postgraduate study in environmental science, sustainability, climate policy or conservation, before moving into more specialised roles in research or strategic environmental work.

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: case-based teaching forces you to think commercially. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if you shar…

I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” good transport links make it ea…
