About this course

Environmental management addresses one of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century, the question of how human societies can use natural resources, build infrastructure, and organise economic activity in ways that do not undermine the ecological systems on which all life depends. It is a discipline that draws on natural science, social science, economics, and policy analysis, asking students to understand environmental problems at both a technical and a governance level. The ability to think across disciplines and to move between scientific evidence and policy recommendation is central to what the field develops.

At the University of Manchester, this four-year full-time programme includes a placement that gives you structured professional experience as part of your degree. Manchester is a leading research university with particular strengths in sustainability, urban governance, and environmental policy, and its location in a major city provides access to local and regional organisations working on environmental challenges in practice. Across the programme you will study ecological systems and environmental science alongside planning law, environmental economics, corporate sustainability, and the international frameworks that govern issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and water management.

You will develop quantitative and qualitative research skills, the ability to interpret environmental data, and the capacity to communicate complex findings to different audiences.

The placement year is an important feature, allowing you to work within an environmental consultancy, public agency, NGO, or corporate sustainability team, gaining experience that bridges academic study and professional practice. This kind of applied experience is highly valued by employers in a sector where graduate roles typically require both technical credibility and an understanding of how organisations and institutions actually work.

Graduates of environmental management programmes move into roles in environmental consultancy, local and national government, NGOs, sustainability and corporate responsibility functions in business, research institutions, and international development organisations.
