About this course

Environmental science and geography together address some of the most urgent questions facing contemporary societies. Environmental science examines the physical and chemical processes shaping the natural world, including climate systems, biogeochemical cycles, pollution, and ecosystem dynamics. Geography provides the spatial perspective, analysing how physical environments and human populations interact and how the consequences of environmental change are distributed unevenly across places and communities.

Together they give you the tools to understand environmental problems in their full complexity and to contribute to solutions.

At Keele this three-year full-time programme develops your understanding of the science behind major environmental crises alongside the spatial and human dimensions of those crises. You will study topics ranging from climate science and ecosystem ecology to geospatial data analysis, land use, and the social drivers of environmental behaviour. Fieldwork, laboratory projects, and industry placements are central to the programme, grounding your academic learning in real environments and real professional contexts.

A sandwich year gives you the opportunity to spend a sustained period working in a professional setting, and a year abroad allows you to engage with different environmental and geographic contexts at an international partner institution. Work placement experience is integrated throughout, preparing you for the transition from study to professional life.

You will develop skills in data collection and analysis, geographical information systems, environmental monitoring, scientific communication, and critical thinking about policy and practice. These are precisely the skills that environmental employers across the public and private sectors need.

Graduates move into careers in environmental consultancy, nature conservation, land management, geospatial analysis, government agencies, sustainability and corporate environmental management, and environmental research. Postgraduate study in environmental science, geography, conservation, or related fields is a common route for those who wish to specialise or pursue academic research.
