Environmental Science and Outdoor Education
Environmental science and outdoor education is a combination that connects the analytical understanding of natural systems with the experiential, place-based practice of learning in and through the outdoors. Environmental science examines the physical, chemical, and biological processes that govern ecosystems, climate, and the relationship between human activity and the natural world. Outdoor education uses the natural environment as a context for learning, developing personal resilience, community, and wellbeing alongside an understanding of the environments in which education takes place.

At Stirling, this four-year programme draws on one of Scotland's most distinctive outdoor environments. You will study ecology, environmental chemistry, climate science, and conservation alongside the theory and practice of outdoor education, including curriculum design, risk management, leadership development, and the evidence for how learning in natural settings affects young people's development. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to experience different environmental contexts and outdoor education traditions in another country, which typically deepens both your scientific understanding and your pedagogical thinking.
Graduates are well placed for careers in outdoor education centres, schools, environmental charities, conservation organisations, national parks, adventure tourism, and community development. The scientific grounding in environmental science adds credibility and knowledge depth that distinguishes this programme from purely vocational outdoor education courses, and opens additional routes into environmental consultancy, policy, and research. Many graduates also move into further professional development or postgraduate study in environmental management, outdoor education, or related fields.
