Environmental Science and the Climate Emergency

Environmental science and the climate emergency places the most pressing challenge of our time at the centre of a rigorous scientific education. The climate and environment are changing at rates and in ways that affect every aspect of human and non-human life, from the stability of food systems and the availability of freshwater to the habitability of coastal regions and the viability of ecosystems that have taken millennia to develop. Responding effectively to this emergency requires people who understand the science deeply, who can analyse complex earth systems and who can translate scientific knowledge into the kind of evidence-based action that governments, businesses and communities need.

At Swansea University, this three-year full-time programme is built on a recognition that now is the time to act boldly to forge effective local and global responses to the planetary crisis. You will develop a scientific understanding of Earth's climate system, of atmospheric, oceanic and terrestrial processes and of how human activity is altering them. You will engage with the science of environmental change across multiple timescales, with the tools used to monitor and model environmental systems, and with the policy, governance and social dimensions of the climate emergency.

The programme takes seriously both the scientific diagnosis and the question of what effective responses look like at different scales, from local adaptation to international climate agreements.

A typical entry tariff of 120 points makes the programme accessible to students from a range of scientific backgrounds, and the three-year full-time structure gives you a grounding that is both rigorous and urgent in its orientation.
