Environmental Science
Environmental science is the multi-disciplinary study of how natural systems work and how human activities are changing them. It draws on biology, chemistry, physics, geology, and geography to examine the processes that govern the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere, and it asks what the consequences of pollution, land use change, biodiversity loss, and climate change will be for the planet's ecosystems and for human wellbeing. The discipline is driven by one of the most urgent sets of problems the world faces, and it is growing rapidly in importance and relevance.
At Northumbria this three-year full-time degree develops your scientific understanding alongside the practical and technical skills that environmental work requires. You will study ecology, earth sciences, atmospheric science, environmental chemistry, GIS, and research methods, and you will develop your ability to collect, analyse, and interpret environmental data in both laboratory and field settings. A sandwich year is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to work in an environmental organisation, consultancy, or government agency before your final year, which is often where you confirm the direction of your career.
A year abroad is also available, and work placement activity is embedded throughout.
Environmental science graduates are in growing demand as governments, businesses, and international organisations take the environmental crisis more seriously. Career paths include roles in environmental consultancy, ecological survey and assessment, pollution control and remediation, sustainability management, water and waste management, government environmental agencies, and conservation organisations.
