Environmental Science

Environmental science is the interdisciplinary study of the Earth's environment: the physical, chemical, biological and human systems that shape it and the ways in which human activity is changing it. It draws on ecology, atmospheric science, geology, chemistry, geography, economics and social science to provide an integrated understanding of environmental problems and potential solutions. In an era of climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and resource depletion, environmental scientists have never been more needed, working across research, policy, consultancy and advocacy to understand and address the pressures on natural systems.

At the University of Stirling, this four-year degree with a year abroad provides a rigorous scientific education in environmental systems alongside the quantitative and analytical skills that applied environmental work requires. You will study ecology, hydrology, climate science, soil science, environmental chemistry, remote sensing and geographic information systems, environmental monitoring and assessment, and the policy and management frameworks that shape how society responds to environmental challenges. A year abroad gives you the opportunity to study environmental science in a different national and ecological context, broadening your understanding of how environmental questions are framed and addressed in different parts of the world.

Graduates go on to careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, government environment agencies, water management, renewable energy, environmental law and policy, research and science communication. Further study at masters or doctoral level in environmental science, ecology, conservation biology or climate science is also a well-established route for those seeking research or specialist professional roles.
