Equine Behaviour and Welfare

Equine behaviour and welfare is a specialist discipline that applies ethology, behavioural science, and animal welfare science to horses, combining scientific rigour with the practical understanding of equine needs and management. It is a field that has grown significantly as awareness of horse welfare has deepened and as the welfare requirements of the Codes of Practice and regulatory frameworks governing equine care have become more demanding.

At Hartpury University, which has extensive equine facilities and strong connections to the equine industry, this four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year with a work placement. You will study equine anatomy and physiology, ethology, learning theory, equine cognition, pain and distress recognition, welfare assessment, and the management practices that promote positive welfare outcomes. The behavioural science content is grounded in evidence and encourages you to think critically about established practices as well as emerging research.

The placement year gives you a full year of professional experience in an equine setting, whether in a welfare organisation, research institution, stud, training yard, or other relevant context.

Hartpury's location in rural Gloucestershire and its substantial equine estate mean that practical engagement with horses is central to your learning throughout the programme. You will develop both scientific and practical competence, and you will graduate with direct professional experience as well as an academic qualification.

Graduates go on to careers in equine welfare organisations, rescue and rehabilitation, equine consultancy, training and behaviour modification, research, equine-assisted therapy, and regulatory or inspection roles. Many also work in yard management, equine education, or veterinary practice support. Some continue to postgraduate study in animal behaviour, animal welfare science, or veterinary-related fields.
