Equine Performance Science

Equine performance science applies the methods and knowledge of sport science to the horse. It is a discipline that sits at the intersection of biology, biomechanics, physiology, and sports coaching, asking how equine athletes can perform at their best, how training can be optimised, and how health and welfare interact with performance. The subject is relevant to competitive equestrian sport at every level as well as to the management of horses in breeding, leisure, and rehabilitation contexts.

Anglia Ruskin University's three-year full-time programme in equine performance science gives you a rigorous grounding in the scientific principles underlying equine health and athletic performance alongside practical skills in working with horses. You will study equine anatomy and physiology, biomechanics of movement, training principles and conditioning, nutrition, veterinary science as it relates to performance, sports psychology for horse and rider, and research methods. The programme develops your ability to assess horses objectively, design and evaluate training programmes, and use evidence to inform decisions about management and welfare.

You will engage with both the science and the practice, developing analytical skills alongside hands-on equestrian competence.

Graduates in equine performance science go on to work as equine performance analysts, sport scientists supporting training operations, equine nutritionists, yard managers, competition grooms, biomechanics specialists, and equine welfare advisers. Others work in equine insurance, veterinary support roles, or equestrian education. The combination of scientific understanding and practical expertise is valued across professional sport, the leisure industry, and the equine health sector.

Some graduates choose to continue to postgraduate study in equine science, veterinary physiotherapy, or related disciplines.
