About this course

Equine studies is a discipline that examines horses from multiple scientific and practical perspectives, covering their biology, health, nutrition, welfare, breeding, and management, as well as the physiology of exercise and the principles that govern performance. Horses are managed across a wide range of contexts, from elite competition sport through to leisure riding, breeding, therapy, and working animal roles, and the science of equine management draws on veterinary physiology, nutrition science, genetics, exercise physiology, and animal welfare to support optimal outcomes in all of these settings.

The part-time Equine Studies programme at Aberystwyth University allows you to explore horse reproduction including breeding technologies, nutrition, welfare, and care for maximum performance, as well as the management of horses in relation to exercise physiology and health. Aberystwyth has a long history of teaching in equine science and outstanding teaching facilities for this specialist subject area, giving you access to the practical equipment and expertise that equine education demands. Part-time study provides the flexibility to combine your degree with existing work or commitments in the equine sector, which is particularly valuable for students who are already working with horses and want to formalise and deepen their professional knowledge.

Graduates from equine studies programmes pursue careers in stable and stud management, equine nutrition, equine welfare and therapy, horse breeding, competition and performance support, equine research, and a range of roles in the equestrian industry. Many also use the degree as preparation for further professional or postgraduate study in equine science, veterinary nursing, or animal management.
