Fashion Design

Fashion design is the creative and technical practice of conceiving, developing, and producing clothing and accessories, and it is a discipline that sits at the crossroads of art, craft, commerce, and culture. Fashion designers need to understand garment construction, textiles, pattern cutting, and the production processes through which ideas become wearable objects, as well as the cultural contexts that give fashion meaning and the commercial realities of an industry that operates at global scale. At the University of Salford this three-year programme is based at the New Adelphi campus in the heart of Greater Manchester, a city with a significant fashion and creative industries presence and strong connections to the textile and garment manufacturing heritage of the north of England. You will develop your design practice across the full creative process, from initial research and concept development through draping, pattern cutting, and making to the presentation of finished work. The course develops not only your technical and creative skills but also your understanding of the fashion industry, its sustainability challenges, and the commercial and cultural contexts in which designers work.

Fashion design graduates work as designers for established fashion houses, as independent designers building their own labels, as pattern cutters, garment technologists, stylists, buyers, and product developers in the fashion and retail industry. Many also move into adjacent creative fields including costume design for film and theatre, textile design, and fashion journalism. The growing importance of sustainability in fashion creates additional opportunities in ethical fashion, circular design, and materials innovation.

Further study at postgraduate level in fashion design, textiles, or fashion management is an option for those who wish to develop a specialist practice or move into a more strategic role within the industry.
