Film and Television

Film and television are the dominant narrative arts of our time. They shape how we understand history, how we process social change, how we experience other cultures and how we encounter ideas that challenge our assumptions. The ability to make compelling screen content is a creative and technical skill of genuine value, and studying it seriously means learning both the craft of production and the critical understanding of how screen media works as art and as industry.

At Southampton Solent University, the three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who want additional preparation before beginning the full degree. You will study the principles and practice of filmmaking and television production, developing skills in camera operation, directing, editing, sound design and production management. Alongside practical work, you will study screen culture, narrative theory and the industries within which film and television are made and distributed, developing the critical awareness that serious practitioners need.

The degree develops your ability to make creative decisions with intention and to understand the contexts in which those decisions will be received.

Solent's location in Southampton gives access to the south of England's creative industries, and the university's practical, career-oriented approach means that you will build a portfolio of work and develop professional habits throughout your studies.

Graduates work across the screen industries in roles including director, producer, editor, camera operator, sound designer and production coordinator.
