Film and TV Production
Film and television production is a craft-based discipline that prepares you to create moving image work, from initial concept through to finished screen product. It encompasses storytelling, direction, cinematography, editing, sound design and production management, demanding both technical competence and creative judgement. Whether you are drawn to narrative fiction, documentary, experimental film or television formats, the discipline requires you to understand how the various elements of production work together and how decisions made at every stage shape the audience's experience.
At Sheffield Hallam University, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year and a work placement, providing structured support at the start of your studies and substantial professional experience as you progress. You will work within a community of creatives, producing a range of film projects including narrative, documentary and experimental work, both independently and collaboratively. Sheffield Hallam has strong connections to the screen industries, and the combination of practical production experience and professional placement opportunities means you graduate with a portfolio of work and a realistic understanding of how the industry operates.

Graduates from film and TV production programmes go on to work across the screen industries in roles including directing, producing, camera operation, editing, sound recording, production coordination and post-production. The UK screen sector is large and diverse, encompassing major broadcasters, independent production companies, advertising agencies, streaming platforms, corporate video producers and documentary filmmakers. Many graduates combine freelance project work with employed roles, building a career across a range of production contexts.
Some move into adjacent areas such as film education, arts development or screen writing. Postgraduate study in film production, screen studies or digital media is also an option for those who want to develop their practice further.
