Film and visual culture is a discipline that studies the moving image in all its forms, from early cinema to digital media, examining how films are made, how they create meaning, and how they reflect and shape the societies that produce and consume them. It draws on film theory, cultural history, and aesthetic analysis to develop close reading skills and a critical understanding of visual media as a cultural force. Pairing this with Spanish and Latin American studies adds a rich linguistic and cultural dimension, opening access to one of the most vibrant and diverse cinematic and cultural traditions in the world.

This five-year full-time degree at the University of Aberdeen combines rigorous training in the history and theory of the moving image with high-level study of Spanish language, alongside the literature, history, and cultures of Spain and Latin America, including Latin American cinema as a subject in its own right. You will develop analytical skills in reading visual texts and situating them within their cultural and historical contexts, while also building Spanish to a level that enables genuine scholarly and professional engagement with Spanish-language culture.
