Film
Film is a storytelling medium of extraordinary power, capable of immersing audiences in other times, places, and lives in ways that no other art form quite replicates. But it is also an industry, a craft, and a cultural institution, shaped by economics, technology, politics, and social change as much as by artistic vision. Studying film at degree level means engaging with all of these dimensions: developing your own voice as a maker of screen stories while also developing the analytical and critical understanding to engage with cinema as a cultural and historical phenomenon.
At Edge Hill University, this three-year full-time programme prepares you for a future as a storyteller. You will explore a diverse range of film narratives and traditions, developing a unique creative voice and the practical skills to tell stories on screen. The programme takes a genuinely dual approach, combining filmmaking practice with critical and theoretical study, so that your creative work is informed by your understanding of the history and theory of cinema and your analytical work is grounded in the experience of actually making films.
A sandwich year in industry, a year abroad, and work placements are all part of the programme, giving you direct experience in professional film settings and an international perspective on filmmaking practice and culture.
With a typical entry tariff of 120 UCAS points, this degree attracts students who combine creative ambition with critical curiosity. Graduates find careers as directors, screenwriters, producers, editors, cinematographers, documentary filmmakers, and content creators across film, television, streaming, and online media.
