Film & Media and Philosophy

Film, media, and philosophy is a combination that takes seriously the idea that moving image culture and philosophical enquiry have always been in dialogue. Films explore questions of identity, perception, reality, ethics, and representation in ways that engage mass audiences precisely because these questions matter. Philosophy provides the conceptual tools to articulate what films are doing, to evaluate arguments about media's effects on society, and to think rigorously about questions of representation, truth, and experience that visual media raise with particular urgency.

At the University of Stirling, this four-year full-time programme allows you to study the theory, history, and practice of film and media alongside the major traditions and problems of philosophy. You will develop skills in textual and visual analysis, critical argumentation, and research, engaging with contemporary media culture and philosophical thought in ways that illuminate each other. The programme includes a year abroad, broadening your perspective and giving you the opportunity to encounter film, media, and philosophy in a different national context.

Graduates of film, media, and philosophy programmes pursue careers in journalism, broadcasting, the creative industries, publishing, arts management, public relations, education, and research. The philosophical training provides a foundation for law, the civil service, and policy roles, while the media knowledge opens doors in digital communications, content production, and the wider creative economy.
