Film & Media Studies and French

Film and media studies examines the moving image in its broadest dimensions, from the history and theory of cinema to the rapidly evolving landscape of digital media, streaming platforms, and interactive content. It asks how screen texts are constructed, what meanings they carry, how they circulate in society, and how industry structures shape what gets made and who gets to see it. French, as an academic discipline, opens access to one of the world's richest national cinema traditions as well as the broader cultural, literary, and intellectual life of the Francophone world.

At Stirling, this four-year full-time programme combines film and media studies with French language and culture, exploring both disciplines with the rigour and critical ambition that the university's approach to the humanities fosters. You will study film form, history, and theory alongside French language development and engagement with French and Francophone culture. A year abroad gives you the opportunity to study at a partner institution in France or a French-speaking country, deepening your linguistic competence and your cultural perspective simultaneously.

Graduates of film and media studies with French pursue careers in the film, television, and media industries, as well as in journalism, cultural diplomacy, arts management, education, and the civil service. French language skills open additional pathways in European institutions, international journalism, and careers with Francophone organisations and markets. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in film, media, or French studies, where the combination of critical and linguistic training positions them well for academic research or professional postgraduate programmes.
