Film Production

Film production is the craft and discipline of making films, encompassing all the stages from development and pre-production through to principal photography and post-production. It is a collaborative and technically demanding field that requires both creative vision and practical competence, bringing together writing, directing, producing, cinematography, editing, sound and the wide range of technical and logistical skills that a film project demands. Studying it at degree level develops your ability to work across these dimensions and to understand the industry contexts in which professional film-making takes place.

At Roehampton University, this programme is part-time and includes a foundation year, a sandwich year and a work placement. The foundation year provides a supported entry into degree-level film study, building the creative and analytical foundations you will need. The sandwich and placement elements give you structured professional experience in the film or media industry, where you will work on real productions and develop the professional skills and connections that a screen career requires.

You will develop skills in screenwriting, directing, cinematography, editing, producing and sound design, working on both individual and collaborative projects. Critical and contextual study of film history, theory and the contemporary industry is integrated with practical work, developing the analytical understanding that makes you a more thoughtful and intentional film-maker. The combination of creative ambition and professional preparation is central to the programme's approach.

Graduates go into careers in film and television production, working as directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, writers, sound designers and production managers, as well as in the wider creative industries. Some build careers in documentary, animation or short film. Others go into roles in arts administration, media education, visual communications and digital content.

Further study or vocational training in specific production disciplines is a common route for those who want to develop specialist expertise.
