Film Studies and Creative Writing

Film Studies and Creative Writing is a degree that approaches storytelling from two complementary angles. Film Studies develops your ability to analyse, interpret and contextualise cinema as a cultural, artistic and industrial form, examining how films construct meaning through visual language, sound, narrative structure and the broader conditions of their production, distribution and reception. Creative Writing develops your own practice as a maker of fiction, poetry, screenwriting and other literary forms, building your craft skills and your ability to find and sustain a distinctive creative voice.

Studied together, they produce graduates who can engage with narrative at the highest analytical and creative levels simultaneously.

At the University of Keele, this full-time three-year programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and work placement opportunities, and is designed with strong links to industry partners. The contemporary curriculum covers the analysis of film, screenwriting and literary forms within global cultural, political and economic contexts, and you will build a diverse portfolio through practical assignments and professional development activities. The combination of academic analysis and creative practice is supported by experienced lecturers and a curriculum that takes seriously both the craft of writing and the critical study of cinema.

Film Studies and Creative Writing graduates go on to careers in screenwriting, script development, film criticism and journalism, production, publishing, editorial work, the creative industries and digital content. Teaching, arts administration, communications and media production are also common destinations.
