Fine Art

Fine art is a discipline rooted in the making and critical examination of visual and conceptual art, concerned with the ideas, materials, processes, and contexts that give works of art their meaning and force. It is not a single tradition but a broad field encompassing painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, installation, photography, video, performance, and hybrid practices, and one of its defining qualities is its openness to experimentation and self-questioning. Studying fine art at degree level means developing your own practice while also engaging seriously with the history of art and with the theoretical frameworks that surround contemporary culture.

This extended degree at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle runs over four years, full time, and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities. The extended format gives you more time to develop the depth and confidence of an independent practice, and the placement and year abroad provide international and professional perspectives that can significantly shape your work and your graduate identity. You will build a body of studio work alongside engagement with art history, critical theory, and the study of contemporary artists and movements.

You will learn to articulate your practice verbally and in writing, an increasingly important skill for artists navigating exhibition, funding applications, and public engagement. Critique, discussion, and collaborative working are woven through the programme.

Graduates of fine art programmes pursue a wide range of careers. Some build independent practices as artists, supported by teaching, residencies, commissions, and exhibition work. Others move into arts administration, gallery and museum roles, arts education, community arts, and cultural policy.

The creative, analytical, and self-directed skills fine art develops are also relevant to design, advertising, publishing, and the broader creative industries. Further study options include postgraduate degrees in fine art, curatorial practice, art education, and related fields.
