Fine art is the practice of making work with visual or material means as a primary mode of expression, enquiry, and communication. It encompasses painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, video, installation, performance, and the many hybrid and experimental forms that contemporary artists have developed to respond to the world they inhabit. Fine art is not simply a set of technical skills but a way of thinking: it asks what images, objects, and experiences can do that language alone cannot, and it develops the creative intelligence, critical awareness, and independent judgment that sustain a practice over the course of a career.

At Leeds Beckett University, this part-time fine art degree allows you to develop your practice alongside other commitments, taking your studies at a pace that fits your life. You will develop your artistic ideas and skills in dialogue with tutors and fellow students, engaging with contemporary art, art history, and critical theory alongside your studio practice. The programme gives you the opportunity to exhibit your work in public-facing exhibitions and at the annual degree show, which brings arts professionals from across the country to see student work, providing genuine exposure to the professional art world before you graduate.

A year abroad is also available, giving you the chance to develop your practice in a different cultural and artistic environment.

Fine art graduates pursue a remarkable range of paths. Many develop professional practices as exhibiting artists, which typically involves combining studio practice with teaching, arts administration, community arts work, or other employment. Others move into curatorial work, arts management, art therapy, design, film and television art direction, or art education.
