Fine Art

Fine art is the practice of making that prioritises creative inquiry, conceptual development, and artistic expression over functional or commercial ends. It is a discipline that rewards sustained curiosity about the world, willingness to develop a personal perspective, and the ability to communicate complex ideas through visual and material means. Fine art today encompasses an exceptionally wide range of practices, including painting and drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, video and film, installation, performance, digital media, and hybrid forms that resist easy categorisation, and a degree in fine art is an invitation to develop your own practice within this broad field.

At the University of Reading, this programme includes a foundation year for those entering without a traditional art and design background, a sandwich year with work placement, and a year abroad. The combination provides an unusually rich range of experiences alongside the studio-based core of the degree, giving you professional industry experience and international exposure alongside the creative and critical development that is central to fine art education. Reading's fine art department operates within a research environment with particular strengths in contemporary painting and critical theory, and students benefit from a learning community that takes art-making seriously as an intellectual practice.

Fine art graduates pursue careers as practising artists, working across a range of contexts including gallery exhibition, public art commissions, residencies, and collaborative projects. The critical and analytical skills developed through fine art, including close looking, interpretive argument, and the ability to contextualise creative decisions, are also valued in commercial design, art direction, publishing, and film and television.
