Finnish and Ukrainian

Finnish and Ukrainian is a combination that places two remarkable languages, each from different language families and each with its own distinctive literary and cultural traditions, at the centre of your degree. Finnish, a Finno-Ugric language with no relationship to the Indo-European languages that dominate European universities, is spoken in one of the world's most technologically advanced and educationally innovative countries. Ukrainian, an East Slavic language, is the language of a nation whose cultural identity, political history, and international significance have taken on new urgency in recent years.

At University College London, this four-year full-time degree is divided equally between Finnish and Ukrainian, giving you the opportunity to develop both languages to a high level. You will take modules in language skills covering speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation, alongside cultural modules that explore literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics relevant to each language community. The curriculum is wide-ranging and allows you to tailor the degree to your interests.

A year abroad in the third year is spent between countries where Finnish and Ukrainian are spoken, giving you genuine immersive experience in both language communities and the cultural understanding that only direct engagement can provide.
