About this course

Food business and marketing sits at the intersection of one of the world's most fundamental industries and the commercial disciplines needed to operate effectively within it. Food is not just a biological necessity: it is a vast and complex global industry involving agriculture, manufacturing, retail, logistics, regulation, and an ever-changing relationship with consumer preferences and public health concerns. Understanding how food businesses operate, how products are developed and marketed, and how companies navigate the regulatory and sustainability pressures shaping the sector requires both technical knowledge of the food system and rigorous commercial and marketing training.

At the University of Reading this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing additional academic preparation for students who would benefit from strengthening their scientific or business foundations before the main degree. The University of Reading has particular strengths in food science and agriculture, situating this degree within a rich research and teaching environment that takes the food industry seriously. You will study marketing strategy, consumer behaviour, supply chain management, food law and regulation, and the commercial dynamics of the food sector, developing a well-rounded understanding of how food businesses create and communicate value.

Graduates from food business and marketing programmes are well placed for careers in the food and drink industry, in roles including marketing manager, brand manager, product development executive, commercial analyst, buyer, and supply chain manager. The food sector is one of the UK's largest industries, and it consistently needs graduates who combine business and marketing competence with a genuine understanding of the food system. Retail, manufacturing, ingredient supply, food service, and agricultural businesses all recruit from food business programmes.

Further study in marketing, food science, or business is another option for those wishing to deepen their expertise.

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the consulting projects with real companies genuinely prepare you for the working world. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” loca…
