About this course

Football performance coaching is a specialist field within sport science and coaching education, concerned with the knowledge, skills, and professional practice needed to develop players and teams at every level of the game. It draws on sports science, exercise physiology, psychology, tactical and technical analysis, and pedagogy, bringing these together in the specific context of football. Understanding how to coach effectively requires more than knowledge of the game: it demands an ability to observe performance, to communicate clearly with players of different ages and abilities, to design training environments that produce learning and improvement, and to apply evidence from sport science in practical settings.

At the University of St Mark and St John, this four-year full-time programme integrates academic study with professional practice, and includes a Professional Practice Year that gives you extended placement experience in a coaching environment. This structure reflects the practical orientation of the programme: coaching is ultimately a performance profession, and the best preparation for it combines theoretical understanding with substantial time in real coaching contexts. You will study the principles of performance coaching, player development pathways, tactical frameworks, the physical demands of football and how to prepare players for them, and the psychological aspects of performance and coaching relationships.

The Professional Practice Year, typically completed in the third year of the programme, places you within a football club, school, community sports organisation, or other relevant setting. This is a significant period of professional immersion, allowing you to develop your coaching practice under supervision, build a professional network, and test your skills and understanding in contexts that matter. Students have completed placements in professional and semi-professional football clubs, FA-affiliated development programmes, and educational settings.

Graduates from football performance coaching programmes pursue careers as football coaches at professional, semi-professional, community, and youth development levels, as well as in coach education, sport development, physical education, talent identification, and performance analysis. Further study in sport coaching, sport science, or education supports those wishing to develop specialist expertise or move into research and coach education roles.

Would do it again
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if you share…

A great decision
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” local cost of living…
