Forensic Investigative Psychology

Forensic investigative psychology applies psychological theory and research methods to the understanding of criminal behaviour, the justice system, and the ways in which psychology can inform investigation, assessment, and treatment. It draws on cognitive psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, and clinical approaches to address questions such as why people commit crimes, how witnesses and victims experience traumatic events, how offender profiling works in practice, and what rehabilitation and risk assessment involve. The field sits at the intersection of science, law, and social policy, and it demands both rigorous thinking and ethical sensitivity.

At the University of Winchester, this three-year full-time programme introduces you to the psychological foundations of forensic practice. You will study research methods and statistics alongside substantive areas such as the psychology of deception, eyewitness testimony, victim experiences, interviewing techniques, criminal profiling, and the treatment of offenders. The programme draws on applied as well as theoretical knowledge, and you will be taught by experienced lecturers and qualified applied psychologists who bring real professional insight into the classroom.

Forensic psychology is a competitive field and many roles require further postgraduate training, but this degree provides a strong foundation for that next step. Graduates may go on to train as forensic or clinical psychologists, work in the probation service, the prison service, secure hospitals, victim support organisations, or social services, or pursue careers in policing, criminal justice policy, or social research. The British Psychological Society accreditation pathway, where applicable, opens routes toward chartered status in psychology.
