Forensic Psychology

Forensic psychology applies the science of psychology to questions that arise within the legal and criminal justice system. It draws on clinical, cognitive, social, and developmental psychology to understand criminal behaviour, assess risk, work with offenders and victims, and advise courts and other institutions. The discipline sits at the boundary between two demanding fields, and studying it requires both rigorous scientific training and genuine engagement with the ethical and social complexities of crime and justice.

This three-year full-time programme at the University of Northampton gives you a grounded education in psychological science before directing that knowledge toward forensic contexts. You will study theories of crime and offending, the psychology of witness testimony and investigative interviewing, risk assessment, mental disorder and the law, rehabilitation, and the psychology of victimisation. Research methods are a core thread throughout the programme: you will learn to design studies, collect and analyse data, and interpret findings critically, which is essential both for academic credibility and for professional practice in this field.

You will also examine the ethical dimensions of applying psychology in legal settings, where the consequences of error can be profound.

Forensic psychology graduates pursue a range of careers within and alongside the criminal justice system. Many work in prisons and secure hospitals, in probation and youth offending services, or in police forces supporting investigations and risk management. Others work in victim support, social care, and community organisations.

Some graduates go on to qualify as chartered forensic psychologists through the British Psychological Society, which requires further training and supervised practice beyond the degree. Postgraduate study in forensic psychology, clinical psychology, or criminology is a common route for those who want to advance in the field.
