About this course

Forensic science applies the methods of chemistry, biology, physics, and genetics to the investigation of crime and the analysis of physical evidence. It is a discipline where scientific rigour meets legal process: every conclusion must be defensible under scrutiny, and the chain of custody from crime scene to courtroom must be maintained with absolute care. Forensic scientists examine trace evidence such as fibres, glass, paint, and soil; analyse biological material including blood and DNA; and work with chemical evidence from toxicology and fire investigation.

The field demands both technical precision and clear written and verbal communication.

At Anglia Ruskin University, this four-year full-time programme immerses you in the discipline from the outset. You will learn to collect, analyse, and interpret chemical and biological evidence from crime scenes, working in specialist facilities including a SuperLab and authentic crime scene rooms. The degree also includes an on-site courtroom, giving you the opportunity to practise presenting forensic findings in the kind of formal legal setting where your work will ultimately be tested.

This combination of scientific training and professional simulation reflects the degree's focus on preparing you for real forensic practice, not just academic knowledge of the discipline.

Forensic science graduates go on to work in police forensic services, government laboratories, private forensic science providers, environmental agencies, and academic research. Roles include forensic scientist, crime scene investigator, toxicologist, and DNA analyst, and some graduates move into adjacent areas such as environmental forensics, pharmaceutical analysis, or quality control in regulated industries. Many also pursue postgraduate study in specialist areas such as forensic toxicology, digital forensics, or forensic genetics, deepening their technical expertise and expanding the range of roles available to them.
