About this course

Forensic Science applies the methods and knowledge of natural science to the investigation of crime and the justice system. It encompasses a wide range of scientific disciplines, including chemistry, biology, physics, toxicology and digital forensics, united by their application to questions of legal significance. Forensic scientists analyse physical evidence from crime scenes, interpret what that evidence means, and communicate their findings to legal professionals in ways that can withstand rigorous examination.

The discipline demands both rigorous scientific training and an understanding of how scientific evidence functions within the criminal justice process.

At the University of Bradford, this full-time three-year programme includes an optional foundation year, providing a supported route into degree-level scientific study for students who need additional preparation. You will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, laboratory practicals, workshops, case studies and directed study, developing the theoretical knowledge and practical analytical skills that forensic science practice requires. The individual project or dissertation allows you to develop independent research skills in a topic of your choosing, building the scholarly confidence and scientific depth that professional and postgraduate roles demand.

Forensic Science graduates go on to careers in forensic science laboratories, police services, the courts and legal system, environmental agencies, the pharmaceutical industry and toxicology. Crime scene examination, document analysis, digital forensics, toxicological analysis and the investigation of fire or explosion are among the specialist areas in which forensic scientists work. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in forensic science, analytical chemistry, biology or related fields to develop specialist expertise, and professional development in forensic practice is supported by bodies such as the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences.

Teaching and science communication are also viable routes for those who wish to share their knowledge beyond laboratory practice.
