Forensic Science
Forensic science applies the methods and principles of biology, chemistry and physical science to questions of legal significance. It encompasses the collection and analysis of physical evidence from crime scenes and other contexts, the examination of biological materials including DNA, the analysis of drugs, toxins and fire residues, and the preparation of expert testimony for courts. As investigative technology has advanced, the field has expanded well beyond fingerprinting and DNA profiling, encompassing digital forensics, environmental forensics, archaeological forensics and the analysis of historical or disputed materials.
At the University of Bedfordshire, this four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year, providing an accessible entry route that builds your scientific foundations before you progress into the main degree. You will develop a comprehensive understanding of the biological and chemical sciences that underlie forensic analysis, and you will engage with areas including DNA analysis, toxicology, criminal psychology, fire and explosive analysis, and the most recent advances in forensic technology. The course takes seriously both the science and the legal context in which forensic evidence operates, helping you to understand how laboratory findings translate into evidence that can be scrutinised in court.
Graduates from forensic science programmes go on to work as forensic scientists, crime scene investigators, laboratory analysts, toxicologists and expert witnesses.
