About this course

Forensic Sciences applies the methods of the natural and physical sciences to the investigation and analysis of evidence in legal and criminal contexts. It encompasses a broad range of disciplines: chemistry, biology, toxicology, DNA analysis, ballistics, digital forensics, and scene examination all fall within its scope. The forensic scientist's role is to provide objective scientific evidence that assists the courts in determining the truth, and doing this well requires both deep technical expertise and a rigorous understanding of how evidence is handled, interpreted, and presented.

At Abertay University, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you an international dimension to your forensic education. Abertay has a strong focus on applied science and strong links to the criminal justice community in Scotland. You will study crime scene investigation, biological evidence analysis, chemical and toxicological analysis, digital forensics, and the legal and procedural frameworks within which forensic science operates.

Laboratory work is central throughout, and you will develop the practical skills needed to handle, analyse, and document physical evidence to the standard required in legal proceedings.

Forensic Science graduates pursue careers in police forensic laboratories, private forensic science providers, the Forensic Science Regulator's office, and related public sector bodies. Digital forensics is a rapidly growing specialism, and graduates with expertise in this area are in particular demand across law enforcement and corporate investigation. Toxicology roles in clinical and analytical settings, and pathology support roles, are further options.

Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in forensic science, forensic toxicology, digital forensics, or forensic pathology to develop the specialist expertise required for the most technical roles. The year abroad enriches your understanding of how forensic science is practised and regulated in different legal systems.
