Forest Management

Forest management is the science and practice of sustainably maintaining, restoring, and developing woodland ecosystems for environmental, economic, and social benefit. Forests are among the planet's most important ecosystems: they regulate water cycles, sequester carbon, support extraordinary biodiversity, and provide livelihoods for communities across the world. As climate change and land-use pressures intensify, the expertise needed to manage forests wisely has never been more important.

This five-year full-time programme at the University of Cumbria, taught at the National School of Forestry in Ambleside, begins with an integrated foundation year designed to build your academic skills and core knowledge before you progress into the degree proper.

You will develop a thorough understanding of forest ecology, woodland management techniques, and the social, economic, and policy contexts within which forestry is practised. The curriculum covers tree biology and silviculture, forest planning, habitat conservation, and the principles of sustainable land management. Cumbria's location in and around the Lake District means you have direct access to diverse woodland and upland environments, allowing the programme to combine classroom learning with substantial fieldwork and practical experience.

The integrated foundation year at the Carlisle campus eases the transition into higher education, ensuring you have the grounding in scientific method and academic writing needed to succeed in the degree years.

A typical entry tariff of 104 points makes the programme accessible to students who show genuine motivation for environmental work. Graduates from forest management programmes move into roles in forestry commissions and environmental agencies, private estate management, conservation organisations, ecological consultancy, land management, and environmental policy.
