Foundation to Nursing
Nursing is one of the most important professions in any society, providing the clinical care, human presence, and patient advocacy that underpin the health and wellbeing of populations. Nurses are the healthcare professionals patients see most often and for the longest time, and the quality of nursing care is one of the strongest determinants of patient outcomes. The profession requires a combination of scientific knowledge, clinical skill, ethical commitment, and the human qualities needed to care for people at their most vulnerable.
At the University of Liverpool, this programme begins with a foundation year, which provides structured preparation for the demands of degree-level nursing study for students who need to build their academic and scientific foundations before entering the main programme. The full programme also includes a year abroad, which is an unusual feature for a nursing degree and reflects Liverpool's international orientation and its commitment to developing nurses with a broad perspective on global healthcare challenges. Clinical placements are central to the nursing curriculum throughout, giving you the hands-on patient care experience that registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council requires.
You will study the biological sciences underpinning nursing practice, including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and microbiology, alongside the social and psychological dimensions of health and illness, the legal and ethical framework governing nursing, and the evidence-based approaches to clinical assessment and care planning that professional nursing requires. Both theoretical and practical learning are integrated throughout, so that your academic understanding and your clinical competence develop together.
Graduation from an NMC-approved nursing programme leads to eligibility for registration as a nurse, allowing you to practise in the NHS and in private and voluntary sector healthcare settings across the UK. Nursing offers a genuinely diverse career, with the opportunity to specialise in areas such as critical care, mental health, children's nursing, oncology, or community nursing. Advanced practice, nurse consultancy, management, education, and research are all routes available to registered nurses who wish to develop their careers.
