French, German, and Italian together span the major Romance and Germanic branches of European language, encompassing three distinct linguistic and cultural traditions with remarkable depth and global significance. French carries with it a world literature, a philosophical tradition, a Francophone world of over 300 million speakers, and a dominant role in international diplomacy. German is the most widely spoken native language in Europe, the language of one of the world's largest economies, and the vehicle for a philosophical and scientific tradition of extraordinary importance.

Italian is the language of one of the great art and literary civilisations of the world, of Renaissance thought, and of a contemporary culture that remains enormously influential in design, fashion, film, and cuisine.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year, full-time MA (Hons) programme develops all three languages to a high level of proficiency, combining linguistic training with engagement with the literatures, cultures, histories, and contemporary realities of the French-speaking, German-speaking, and Italian-speaking worlds. The breadth of what you study is matched by the depth expected in each language: you are developing genuine working competence across three major European languages simultaneously. A year abroad is embedded in the degree, giving you sustained immersion in one or more of your target-language environments.
