French and Philosophy

French and philosophy is a combination that places you at the centre of two of Europe's most intellectually distinguished traditions. France's contribution to philosophy is extraordinary, from Descartes and Pascal through the Enlightenment thinkers, Comte, Bergson, and Sartre, to structuralism, post-structuralism, and the critical theory of Foucault, Derrida, and Bourdieu. French literature, from Racine to Flaubert, Proust, Camus, and contemporary writing, is equally rich.

Philosophy as a discipline trains you to reason with precision, to construct and evaluate arguments, and to examine the fundamental questions of knowledge, ethics, mind, and politics.

At University College London, this four-year full-time degree develops you across both disciplines at the same time, building your French language skills to an advanced level while immersing you in philosophical reasoning and the history of ideas. UCL's philosophy department and French department are both among the UK's strongest, with research that spans analytic and continental philosophy, French literary and cultural history, and the intersection of the two traditions. You will engage with philosophical texts in both English and French, study literature and cultural history in their original language, and develop the analytical and communicative skills that both disciplines demand.
