About this course

French and Spanish is a combination that brings together two of the most widely spoken languages in the world, each carrying a rich literary and cultural heritage and opening access to communities and societies across Europe, the Americas, Africa and beyond. French connects you to the intellectual and artistic traditions of France, Belgium, Switzerland and the Francophone world. Spanish is the language of Spain, Latin America and significant communities across the globe, and its literature encompasses Cervantes, Lorca, Borges, Garcia Marquez and a continuing tradition of extraordinary richness.

At the University of York you will develop language proficiency in both French and Spanish through an approach that teaches you in the language you are learning, with a focus on society, politics and culture. Many staff are native speakers, and the programme's emphasis on genuine communicative fluency means you progress rapidly. If you choose to study one of the languages from beginner level, the structured progression makes that achievable even without prior experience.

The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement opportunities, and runs with a year abroad component over four years full time, giving you immersive experience in both language communities.

Graduates with French and Spanish are valued across a wide range of careers, including international business, the European institutions, diplomacy, journalism, translation and interpreting, education, the arts, tourism and international development. The combination of two major world languages with strong analytical and communication skills is consistently sought after by employers with international operations or audiences. Postgraduate study in modern languages, translation, European studies, international relations or education is a natural further step.

Exceeded expectations
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On…

Highly recommend
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant stu…
