French

French is not only one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, used across five continents in some of the most culturally and economically significant countries, it is also the vehicle for one of the great literary and philosophical traditions in the Western canon. From Montaigne and Descartes through Flaubert and Baudelaire to Sartre, Beauvoir and the writers of the Francophone world, French literature and thought have shaped art, philosophy and politics in profound ways. Studying French at degree level means developing both linguistic fluency and the cultural depth to engage with this tradition on its own terms.

At the University of Stirling, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, which is the most important single feature of any serious languages degree. Spending time living and studying in a French-speaking country develops fluency, cultural understanding and professional confidence in ways that classroom instruction alone cannot achieve. You will also study the history, culture, politics and literature of France and the Francophone world, giving your language learning the contextual depth it needs to be genuinely useful.

You will develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills progressively across the four years, engaging with literary and non-literary texts, film, media and contemporary cultural and political debates in French. Translation, oral presentation and extended written work in French are all part of how you develop and demonstrate your learning.

Graduates go on to careers in international business, diplomacy, translation and interpreting, journalism, education, publishing, the cultural sector and any role where French language competence is a significant professional advantage. Many continue to postgraduate study in French, linguistics, European studies, translation or international relations.
