French and Italian together constitute one of the most culturally rich dual-language combinations available at degree level. French opens access to one of the great literary and intellectual traditions of European civilisation, from medieval troubadour poetry and Montaigne's essays to the twentieth-century novelists and thinkers who shaped modern thought. Italian takes you into an equally formidable tradition, from Dante and Petrarch through the Renaissance to the great writers of modern Italy, alongside a contemporary culture of significant artistic, musical and economic vitality.

Studying both develops the linguistic precision and cultural depth to engage with each tradition on its own terms.

At the University of Glasgow you will study French and Italian over five years of full-time study, developing proficiency in both languages alongside literary, historical and cultural study in each. The French component allows you to explore a wide range of topics including French comics, song, travel writing, medieval France and contemporary French history, reflecting the breadth of cultural material available within the French tradition. The Italian strand develops equivalent depth in Italian language and culture.
